What is Hypnosis?

Discover how we use the latest techniques of
Clinical Hypnotherapy at our clinic

It starts with relaxation

Hypnosis is a state of mind which puts you in touch with your subconscious. It’s achieved through a combination of relaxation exercises, positive suggestions and (for some people) visualisation techniques.

It’s a naturally occurring state which you experience every day, just before you fall asleep, and right after you wake up.  Our process simply helps you to enter and explore this naturally occurring state of mind.

Many Ways to Use Hypnosis

There are many possible applications of hypnosis in both therapy and coaching.  It can be used to challenge anxiety, overcome phobias, restore regular sleeping rhythms and much more.

Overcome Negative Emotions
Break Habits and Addictions
Stop Negative Thinking

What About Stage Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is also used for entertainment purposes, but you’ll be glad to know that we don’t use any of the same techniques as the ‘stage hypnotists’.  The techniques we use are industry standard, therapeutic techniques that are optimised for use in the state of hypnosis.

Basic Techniques of Hypnotherapy

Suggestion and Imagery

These are the foundation of hypnotherapy and they can be extremely effective.  There will always be an element of both suggestion and imagery in a hypnotherapy session.  However, the terms suggestion and imagery may have a slightly different meaning in hypnosis than in ordinary speech…

Suggestion

Suggestion in hypnotherapy is feedback. To make sure it’s effective we agree all the suggestions we use with you beforehand.  This means that we can use the state of hypnosis to take ideas and concepts that you have already grasped at a conscious level down into your subconscious.  As a result, it’s possible to incorporate new behaviours and thought processes very quickly – much more rapidly than if you use willpower and positive thinking alone.

Some individuals respond to suggestions much better than others, however, it’s important to understand that suggestibility is not gullibility.  In fact, the most suggestible people who come to Unchain Your Mind are often the most intelligent, because being suggestible means that you can learn more quickly.

Imagery

Imagery in hypnotherapy is about engaging the powerful resources of your imagination.  It’s more than simply becoming aware of the pictures in your mind (which some people find hard to access).  The concept of imagery in hypnosis also includes the other senses, not just the visual.  In that respect, it’s just like your dreams.

Hypnotic imagining is an approach to personal change that helps you to ‘see yourself differently’.  You may also be able to imagine yourself feeling more confident in situations that you presently find challenging.  You might gain a new perspective or standpoint on a relationship or obstacle in your life.  In fact, this approach is so powerful that it can be used to solve almost any problem.

Advanced Techniques of Hypnotherapy

Interactive Hypnotherapy

Accessing the Subconscious Mind

Whereas the basic techniques allow us to build new thought patterns and emotional responses, the complex techniques allow us to identify and remove problems from your subconscious.  Because of this, the speed of personal change can be very fast.  Many of the testimonial videos you see on this website are the result of applying interactive hypnotherapy.

The techniques of interactive hypnotherapy fall into two main categories:

Healing Trauma

Trauma doesn’t have to be some big catastrophe or personal tragedy.  Of course, it can be a major event however trauma is often caused by something much more innocuous.  For example, the first day at school can be a very traumatising experience.  Even though we can look at this as an adult and think that it shouldn’t be traumatising, when you’re five years old you are more sensitive to trauma.  As a result, everyone has had some degree of trauma (particularly early in life).  This can give rise to serious problems today.

There are several ways to heal trauma with hypnotherapy however the real power of hypnosis is that we can also use it to identify and locate trauma.  That means that even if you have no idea why you experience your anxiety, depression, or anything else, we can still identify and heal any traumas associated with it.  This often creates significant improvement, even in long-term conditions which have not responded to other forms of treatment.

Resolving Inner Conflict

Perhaps you feel like a part of you wants one thing, and a part of you wants the opposite.  You really want to make progress, but there’s a part of you that can’t let go.  Sometimes you feel that things are ok, but later on, you feel like you’re back at square one.

All these experiences are the result of inner conflicts.

Hypnotherapy contains a highly effective set of techniques to identify and resolver these inner conflicts so that you no longer feel held-back.  It’s an approach that makes hypnotherapy unique because it allows you to explore the deepest reaches of your subconscious and discover your own personal solution to the challenges you are facing.  As a result, you are not relying on obscure psychological models of human thought which may not fit you very well.  You are working with your own, unique, internal makeup.
