Together, these two approaches mean that we can help the vast majority of people, regardless of their ability to achieve deep hypnotic states.

The Power of Your Own Mind

Hypnotherapy works by creating a state of deep relaxation in which your capacity for active imagination comes to life.  It starts with a hypnotic ‘induction’ which helps you to access the state of hypnosis.  The induction is a very simple set of instructions, that anyone can follow, which helps to relax your body and calm your mind.

Once an adequate state of hypnosis has been achieved your ability to visualise is greatly enhanced.  Your mind also becomes more receptive to the positive suggestions that your therapist will offer you.  This happens because hypnosis helps you to access your own subconscious mind, making mental processes (such as visualisation and learning) much more efficient.

Hypnotherapy and the Brain

Neuroscientists are still trying to figure out exactly what happens to the brain during hypnosis.  Currently, they think that areas of the brain which evolved more recently become quiet.  These areas are generally referred to as ‘Executive Function” and they are responsible for logical and rational thought.  As a result primitive, emotional areas of the brain become more accessible and it is possible to make changes at a much deeper level.

Heightened Mental Abilities

The changes in the brain that happen in hypnosis cause your creative abilities to be heightened.  It’s possible to visualise easily in hypnosis, even if you normally find this difficult or impossible.  Hypnosis also helps you to track down and resolve problematic memories and heal up past trauma in a safe and comfortable manner.

Based in Neuroscience

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is based on how the brain works.  For example, we know that certain conditions (like phobias) activate particular brain regions.  Because we know this we can take advantage of the brain’s natural ability to change and adapt.  This means we can relieve (or even remove) phobias in just one session.

We can also use NLP to help you adopt a more positive mindset, beat compulsions and much more.  In fact, new techniques are being invented all the time as we learn more about the brain.

Techniques of NLP

The 3 Language Techniques

In NLP we use language to do much more than simply have a conversation.  We use the power of words to create lasting, rapid and significant change.  The 3 language models of NLP are some of the most sophisticated techniques available to help you change the programming of your brain.

1. Questioning

The way that we speak reveals a lot of our inner world.  For example, we can share memories, describe feelings and explain our thought processes.  However what we don’t say is often just as important as what we do say.  NLP contains questioning models which help us to uncover the missing information that is underneath many common problems such as anxiety and compulsions.

2. Hypnotic Language

There are also language models which can aid you to enter deep states of hypnosis – even if you struggle with the more direct approach which we use on the first session.  In fact a more conversational approach is often preferable for some of the interactive techniques we use.

3. Breakthrough

A third and extremely powerful type of language model is the “Reframing Model”.  Reframing helps you to burst through irrational and unnecessary limitations in you life.  With reframing its possible to overcome lifelong obstacles simply by using different language to describe your capacities and internal resources.

Visualisation Techniques

The images you have in your head are responsible for the majority of your thoughts, feelings and patterns of behaviour.  Just think about how much you rely on visual information to navigate the world around you.  It’s the same on the inside.

Accessing mental images

NLP provides a way to access and alter your mental imagery so that it is less disturbing or problematic to you.  A good example of this is a spider phobia.  All the spiders in the UK are harmless and mostly very small, however, spider phobics still experience automatic and significant fear whenever they see one.  It is not the actual spider which produces this fear response.  It is the mental image of a spider that actually causes the phobia.  NLP can alter that image and remove the phobia.

Even if you struggle to access your mental imagery, our visualisation techniques may still be very effective for you.  In fact, discovering mental imagery is often a case of knowing where to look and our therapists are experts at helping you to do this.

Trauma Release Techniques

Everyone has experienced trauma in their life, however, trauma is widely misunderstood.  Trauma is not just a major event like an assault or an earthquake. Trauma is the result of the way that we respond to external events.  If we respond with resilience then we are not traumatised.  However, if we are not in a resilient state then we may become traumatised by relatively minor events.

Locating and Resolving Trauma

NLP provides a method of both locating and resolving traumatic memories.  For example, your first day at school can be very traumatic simply because you lacked the resilience to properly cope with it.  However, because it is not a major and obviously traumatic moment the memory is repressed.  With NLP we can locate a moment like this and resolve the trauma, releasing you from the feelings of anxiety which may have begun to manifest from that point.

The trauma models of NLP are extremely gentle and do not require you to re-live traumatic experiences.  In this sense, the trauma models of NLP are quite unique and, in our opinion, considerably less intrusive than alternative models such as EMDR.
